Workshop: Data preparation/ processing of qualitative Data
Read more … Workshop: Data preparation/ processing of qualitative Data
Background
For social scientists, research data and materials are often both the starting point and the outcome of research projects. The (long-term) storage and sharing of these research materials within the scientific community does not only increase the transparency and comprehensibility of research, but also allows to re-use these materials using other research methods or posing other research questions. This is particular true for data and materials from qualitative research, as these materials are often particularly rich, comprehensive and complex, thus allowing various kinds of re-use. However, social scientists generally deal with information about human beings, which presents particular challenges for the handling and sharing of qualitative data.
Learning contents
This workshop addresses both quantitative and qualitative researchers and aims to introduce them to the particular ethical, legal and practical challenges of qualitative materials – e.g. in terms of data protection, informed consent, anonymization, documentation and data sharing – to outline good practices as well as examples of fruitful research data management. Particular attention is given to appropriate research documentation using a ‘study report’ and various context materials, and to the anonymization/pseudonymization of qualitative text data, including an introduction to the tool ‘QualiAnon’ that was developed by the Research Data Center Qualiservice (Nicolai et al. 2021). This workshop offers the opportunity to look into data preparation procedures for qualitative data and materials and to learn about their opportunities and challenges for data sharing.
